What is CIS?

The construction industry scheme, or CIS as it is mostly known, is a scheme whereby contractors verify the status of their sub-contractors and deduct the relevant tax, either 20% or 30%.

However, for sole traders, deductions are made without any consideration for their personal allowance nor any legitimate business expenses. For limited companies, instead, this deduction is offset against any PAYE they may owe. 

How it works

What we do for you

At Grace Bellairs Accountants, if you are a sole trader, we can complete your return and make sure that all the expenses you can claim for are claimed and then work out whether or not you are due a rebate. If you are due a rebate we will get this processed ASAP for you and keep you updated every step of the way.

If you’re a contractor we can ensure that you are making the correct deductions by verifying your sub-contractors for you, and if you are also a sub-contractor we can liaise with HMRC to offset the CIS against your PAYE and claim a rebate if due.

Remember, if you are not registered with HMRC as a sub-contractor your contractor will have to deduct tax at 30%. It pays to be registered!

Got a question?

Can I switch to Grace Bellairs Accountants?

Of Course! We will discuss with you the best time in the year to switch to us. This could be during the financial year should you require, but generally it is best to switch at the end of the financial year.

Does Grace Bellairs Accountants offer fixed fees?

Yes!  All of our fees are agreed with you upfront and are split over 12 equal monthly payments.  These are paid by you via a standing order.  Fees will only change if you change the level of service.

Why should I have an accountant?

Whilst it is not a legal requirement to have an accountant file your statutory documents you may wish to consider a few things such as whether you have the time to dedicate to your accounts as any limitation in knowledge will cost you money, accountant’s fees are tax deductible and it is probably best for you to focus on the things that make you money.

Do you offer company secretarial services?

Yes we do. For a flat annual fee of £72 we can offer our address as your registered office. This means that your personal address is not on the public register. We can also provide a company formation service for a one off £150.
